| For years the transformation process, which evolves from a cold ball of clay, modeled and shaped, then fired has been fascinating. Each clay ball evokes a personal response manifested by an ever-evolving selection of form, color and texture. My personal journey with clay explores traditional hand building and throwing techniques. Of special intrigue is slab construction allowing a piece to emerge from a flat sheet of clay. Many of my slab pots display gentle swells which protrude from the flat planes embellished with applied decoration or hand carvings to enhance and complete the forms. I frequently work a series of pieces that advance form and design as the process evolves. While progressing through the series a specific feature will capture my attention and inspire a new pathway. Two constants are apparent within my work, a serene elegance of form and a focus on nature as a design element. Prairies, morning skies, green pastures, leaves and vines are all motif inspirations. I receive inspiration from and play homage to the potters of the past, especially the commercially employed art potters of the early 20th century. Although I do throw some functional pieces, most of my work is comprised of 'one-of-a-kind' decorative pieces. |

Biographical Sketch My lifelong passion for art originated during my secondary school years. During those formative years I found myself interested in three dimensional works. A few short years later I enrolled at Western Michigan University to pursue a major in Art Education coupled with a minor concentrating in lost wax casting of abstract female forms. My formal training then continued with pursuit of a Masters of Art at the University of Illinois, |
